Shop bares all in
sale of candy

The air was heavy with the aromas
of caramel, toffee, chocolate,peppermint,
nougat, pecans and vanilla creams.
Rows and rows of delectable cand-
ies glistened and gleamed in the glass case.
"Psst," I whispered. "Is this where they
have the uh, uh, you know, X-rated candy?"
I hovered at the doorway. One candy
shop in Old Town had already turned huffy at
my question and had informed me indignantly
that of course they didn't sell "dirty" candy -
"we're within 300 feet of a church and school.!

"Oh, you want to see 'what's in The
Refrigerator,'" she said laughing.
"What's in The Refrigerator" is the
password for Adult candy at the Candy Lady.
Mrs. Dorbandt escorted me to a back room and
opened a refrigerator door. Several trays of
candy in the shape of various parts of the human anatomy,
appropriately minted and tinted, reposed inside.
"WE DON'T have many left - they cleaned us out
for Christams," she said. "We're going to make more. We
sold out so many times I can't keep track."
She caught the idea of making exotic candy from the
Erotic Bakery in New York City. She ordered 50 candy molds
from its supplier.
Word-of-mouth passed the word and people now flock
to the shop.
Customers range from the middle 20s to senior citizens.
Public Service Co. ordered a large a batch for an office party,
she said. "WE DON'T keep them out on display," she said. "That might offend too many people."
"Be sure you tell people that when they want to see what's in the refrigerator, they know it'll be rated," she warned.
Some of the customers are furtive and tend to whisper
Others just ask for X-rated candy "outright," she said."If the customer takes it in the spirit of fun we make it in,
nobody is offended," she said.
The candy costs from $5 to $10 an item. Bite-size pieces
cost 20 cents each.
One big seller isn't X-rated, although maybe it should be
labeled "parental guidance." This is a lollipop based on singer
Dolly Parton's figure. You can certainly tell it's dolly. She's wearing
a wig.
